
The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association is an international association of broadcasters with over 100 members in 53 Commonwealth countries. It works jointly with local and national partners in transferring knowledge and skills, developing editorial, journalistic and technological expertise. It offers travel bursaries each year for two weeks travel to other Commonwealth countries to see broadcasting facilities, for training, work attachments, programme making projects or other broadcasting related activity.
In 2005 Don Kushan Anuruddha Dissanayake from SLRC, Sri Lanka went to Singapore to MediaCorp TV to study how developed countries use electronic media to bridge the digital divide. He had to make recommendations to enhance SLRC's network infrastructure and start an expansion project to accomodate its new digital channel.
In 2004 Henry Ngutwa, Company Secretary, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, visited SABC and ICASA in South Africa to learn how to manage change in a complex media environment.
Muhammed Abrar Akram from the Pakistan regulator PEMRA came to the UK to research how other regulators work and learn best practice. He said the visit "added to my knowledge about how broadcasting rules and regulations are being implemented in the UK and will help us to apply good regulatory procedures in Pakistan."
The CBA also runs training courses throughout the Commonwealth, part financed by the Fund. Courses have included a workshop on editorial guidelines in Pakistan, video editing in Trinidad, election coverage in the Caribbean and a workshop on media and climate in the Bahamas and the CBA General Conference 2008.
