One World Media (ex-One World Broadcasting Trust) runs an annual Fellowship Scheme, aimed at senior radio and television broadcasters from developing countries. The Fellowship Scheme brings six broadcast professionals to the UK for a two-week period. They take part in a packed programme of discussion sessions and location visits, tailored to meet the interests of those selected. The scheme has been running since 1996 and has involved over 60 fellows from 21 countries.
"I must sincerely say that the 'ethical and social responsibility' aspects learnt during the fellowship programme in London help me gear my news stories and programmes in a different way. Objectivity and working in the sense of democracy and public response are the main objectives now. I have also imparted (and still do) experience acquired to both senior members of the staff and new journalists. The aspect of funding of public broadcasting and preparing our station to face the challenges of liberalisation of airwaves are themes on which I am currently working.
Feycal Caunhye, Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, Mauritius
"One of the most significant things that the fellowship has done this year is try and narrow the gap between the developed world and the developing world, and to bring common understanding. Everywhere we went we did not just learn, we shared. There is no doubt in my mind that the fellowship programme can help so many other journalists from the developing world to change the media landscapes in their countries for the better."
Chanda Mfula, Zambezi FM, Zambia
"One of the main reasons for my shift to the news side of the business has been the fellowship. I am looking forward to work with a few ideas and skills that I picked up in the course of the fellowship. I would like to introduce new ethics and standards of journalism in my channel, something that is fast disappearing among Indian TV journalists these days."
