The Thomson Foundation is an international media for development NGO which exists to improve communication around the world. With aid from the Fund it offered places on its three month Broadcast Journalism Diploma Course.
After three failed attempts, through lack of funds, to secure a place, Erik Kakore, a political and court reporter for Radio Simba in Kampala, Uganda finally made it to the UK in 2004. His course tutor said "he came to Cardiff with a good track record but needed to be challenged in vital areas such as story treatment, editing and script writing." Eric said he would try hard to put his new skills into practice and even harder to persuade his colleagues to follow his example. He was also prepared to pass on the benefits of his training to anoyone keen to develop their reporting techniques.
